Andy Warhol was a leading artist in the Pop Art movement. His Campbell Soup Can artworks are among his most notable pieces.

Art Challenge: Draw a Cylinder

Materials:

• drawing pencil

• colored pencils or markers

• paper

• food cans from pantry

Go to your pantry. Do you have Campbell’s Soup? If not, pick out different canned food.

To draw a cylinder you begin by drawing a foreshortened circle. Foreshortened is a visual effect that creates the illusion of objects moving away in space. So a foreshortened circle looks squashed.

Draw the side of the can by drawing verticle lines down from your squashed circle. Those lines are parallel with one another. Then draw add the bottom of the can, which is a curved line that is parallel with the curved line on the top. Voila! you have a can.

Add the details, this is what makes drawing interesting. Look carefully at the can of food. Are there different letter styles or fonts? Do you see any symbols, repeating patterns, or designs. What colors are used?
